The Scandal of God's Love
I. Provocative, 'scandalous' statements and actions of Jesus.
- “The tax collectors and the prostitutes are ahead of you in the kingdom of God.”
- Vineyard Workers who worked late were given the same wage as that who worked earlier.
- It is easier for the camel to enter the eye of the needle than for you to enter the Kingdom
- Prodigal Son over the elder son.
II. God's love is scandlously good news to sinners.
- Jesus himself seems to be a 'scandal' for some. In letter of Paul to Eph: Jesus, who was God, deed not deem equality with God... rather he emptied hiself and took the form of a slave being born in the likeness of man.
- The king of kings has to suffer and die... worst is a death on a cross?
- God's love shakes us to the nerve. the scandal is that he is willing to do that for the sake of sinners, those who are undeserving of his love.
III. Lessons from the Readings for the day
- first reading : men will always have personal responsibility over their actions; sins will always have their proper consequences, but it is not definitive. It is never the last word. “He will live and not die because he has opened his eyes and turned from the sins he had committed” (v. 28). God definitely hates sin but undeniably loves the Sinners. - Gospel: 2 sons Refer to the Jews who are first called to the vineyard, and the Gentiles who at first did not believe but repented in the end.
- the ideal 3rd unmentioned Son, who said yes and followed. e.g, Mary and Jesus.
- the 3rd is, though not impossible difficult to follow. we are all sinners. we have mastered saying NO to God.
- the good news is that God does not condemn sinners. He is not discouraged by our 'NO's of life; God always longs for our conversion- a change of answer to His call, from our NOs turning to Yes! - our obedience to His will.
- God's love shakes us intensely that it brings down the walls of sin to nothing.
- the same love shook the hearts of the hardened sinner and they became saints.
- it will also shake us up that it can also make our NOs into Yes!
